One of the oldest established freeholds in the central region of the penninsula, Bellarane is the realm of His Independant Lordship, Lord Keltar of Bellarane (aka "the Foxlord"), and his wife, Lady Shalane of Bellarane. Lady Shalane is the true ruler of the freehold, but has little patience for the concerns of her subjects, and willingly allows her husband to lead the land.

Bellarane is a rural but well-trafficed realm, nestled between the Midhills in the west and the Kierunmark Highlands in the east. The town and capitol of Bellarane, also called Bellarane, guards the northern border adjoining Blackgate, while the narrow south borders Orbor. Bellarane maintains friendly relations with all of its neighbors though the closest ties are with the independent hillfolk, cousin to the Bella people, and the denizens of the Open Halls.

The Bella are a somewhat insular and reclusive folk, close kin to the people of the Midhills and sharing much of their nature. Lord Keltar, and his predecessors, rule with a light hand, and the Bella are left largely to their own devices, the principal source of government income being the taxes imposed on travellers and merchants utilizing the High Road through Bellarane (and which is well-maintained and patrolled, Lord Keltar being no fool.) Bella are known as herbalists and hedge wizards throughout the Hundred Kingdoms, and it is commonly thought that they closely guard old secrets of haluar earth magic, passing them down through the generations.
