In the first age of the World, Darghin and Orod came into conflict, and the Lord of the Dead had his right hand severed as a result. Since that time, the Hand of the Dead has moved through the world as a tool of death, sought and feared by all people.

The Fellowship of the Unholy Hand are the most recent owners of the divine appendage, and a cult of worshippers has formed around it's divine power. Unlike most cults, the Fellowship of the Unholy Hand draws it's divine power from the artifact of worship, and not from a secret backer or hidden power. It is speculated that the Hand is capable of manifesting a full avatar, but it is unknown what form this avatar would take, or the circumstances that would inspire it. The Hand has never displayed signs of awareness or sentience.

The Fellowship of the Unholy Hand believes their ownership of the Hand grants them the freedom to kill with impunity and to determine the fate of the victim's soul without fear of retribution from grim Orod. Many of their victims are returned as undead, others are assigned to outer realms they would otherwise never see. They happily take "donations" in exchange for arranging a death; further donations can insure the victim's soul never reachs it's final rest.

Needless to say, this flagrant use of power has drawn attention. Yilwyn keeps a close eye on those who poach on her territory, and Eothor would gladly give his own right hand in exchange for this one. Priests of both faiths have insinuated themselves into the Fellowship; the faithful of Eothor as advisors and admirers, the followers of the Bleak Maiden as lay members or actual priests of the Fellowship. Orod himself has taken no action as of yet, but few outside of the Fellowship believe that state of affairs to last.
