Firjotun

Summary paragraph

Personality: Firjotun are not built for subtlety, a trait reflected in their personality. They enjoy the simple pleasures in life, notably drinking and brawling, with a good measure of eating, sleeping, and romancing thrown in. Their giantish blood emerges when angered, however, and they seek satisfaction in the quickest and most brutal way possible. Many firjotun are born beserkers, and can fall into a rage with stunning swiftness.

Description: Firjotun are big, between 7 and 8 feet in height, and heavily built – firjotun men can weigh as much as 700 pounds. Their features are broad and blunt, and their skin is rough and dark brown in color. Some firjotun get a second growth spurt later in life, adding up to two feet in height and 300 pounds in weight to their already imposing frame. Their giantish blood confers some measure of longevity – firjotun reach maturity at 20 years, and middle age at 50.

Relations: Firjotun are looked down upon by almost every other race in Shadowend. True giants regard them as puny half-breeds fit only for menial tasks, while humans and dweorhin see them as smaller versions of the brutal giant raiders they are accustomed to, and treat them accordingly.

Alignment: Firjotun are most often neutral. Their hard culture and lifestyle does little to promote law, but they understand the benefits of cooperation in small groups. Firjotun raised among the hill giants are almost always evil, but those raised nearer to humanity are just as likely to be good.

Firjotun Lands: Utgard, south of the Kameurhorns, is the closest thing there is to a firjotun realm. This harsh, rocky land, caught between the stormy ocean and the jagged slopes of the Horns, is home to firjotun, hill giants, ogres, and other primitive giant tribes and races.

Religion: Thurgulmir is the patron of the firjotun, but a minor deity among the Dalerain otherwise. He was the first giant to take a human wife, and regards firjotun as his children. Thurgulmir’s idea of parenting is extremely lax, however, and he only pays attention to the firjotun race when he wants something from them.

Firjotun Racial Traits

Giant Type: Firjotun are giants, and as such are not subject to spells that specifically target humanoids, such as charm person or hold person. Likewise, effects that affect giants affect firjotun as well. Spells that they cast that normally affect only humanoids affect giants instead.

+2 Strength, +1 Constitution, -1 Dexterity, -1 Intelligence, -1 Charisma: Firjotun are physically strong, but less agile and less adept mentally.

Low-light vision: A firjotun can see twice as far as a human in starlight, moonlight, torchlight, and similar conditions of poor illumination. He retains the ability to distingush color and detail under these conditions.

Medium: As Medium creatures, firjotun have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size.

Powerful Build: The physical stature of firjotun lets them function in many ways as if they were one size category larger.

Whenever a firjotun is subject to a size modifier or special size modifier for an opposed check (such as during grapple checks, bull rush attempts, and trip attempts), the firjotun is treated as one size larger if doing so is advantageous to him.

A firjotun is also considered to be one size larger when determining whether a creature’s special attacks based on size (such as improved grab or swallow whole) can affect him. A firjotun can use weapons designed for a creature one size larger without penalty. However, his space and reach remain those of a creature of his actual size. The benefits of this racial trait stack with the effects of powers, abilities, and spells that change the subject’s size category.

+1 natural armor: Firjotun have thick skin.

+1 racial bonus to attacks with thrown weapons

+2 racial bonus to Climb, Intimidate, and Jump checks.
