Deadly Appearance (Su): The paija is horrifingly ugly. Those within 30 feet of the paija who look directly at it must succeed at a Will save (DC 13) or die. Creatures that successfully save are nauseated for 1d4 rounds, and are immune to that paija’s deadly appearance for 24 hours.

Freedom of Movement (Su): A paija is never slowed or hindered by snow or ice.

High Jump (Ex): A paija's jumping distance (vertical or horizontal) is not limited according to her height.

Paija appear as eight-foot tall hags, with thick, tangled hair and a single leg.  A paija's hair and face is usually matted with gore, and their black claws stained with old blood. They have razor-sharp teeth and prefer human flesh, though they will eat meat they can catch. They bound easily through deep snow, hunting woodsmen, trappers, and anyone else unlucky enough to be abroad in winter.

Combat

Paija prefer fast ambushes to frontal attacks, leaping out from hiding to maximize surprise and use her deadly gaze on as many victims as possible.  They will close to melee only if their remaining opponents appear weak; otherwise they retreat, taking advantage of their freedom of movement and jumping ability to escape, and returning later to feast upon abandoned corpses.

Ecology

Paija live in desolate areas of cold lands, including frozen forests, mountains, and tundra.  They establish a lair near small hamlets or villages and prey upon the locals until they leave, drive the paija away, or are all killed. Some paija build rustic shelters near remote trails, luring traveller with the promise of shelter and warmth in the cold.

Society

Paija live alone in cold lands.  They occasionally keep a male victim alive to mate with, killing him after the job is done. Young paija reach maturity in about five years, at which time they are forced out of their mother's lair.  Paija view other paija as competition, and cooperate only in dire circumstances.

Typical Treasure

Paija accumulate a wide variety of goods from their victims. They have little desire for material things, however, and perishable items seldom last long, leaving harder items like weapons, tools, gems, jewelry, and magic items. Paija utilize magic items when possible.
