The keystone in Larenyss’s attempted resettlement of the Woodmarch, Shalanholt was a small city but powerful city in its’ heyday, holding title to a crescent of land from the Hags Mere to the mountains around Sarn, along the northern shores of the Hags Flow and Goblinwater. Though not a kingdom proper, its influence was scarcely less than that of Asavar, Sieriven, or Sarn, and the four realms treated each other as equals (and included the faerilven and gnomes in such dealings).

Today, Shalanholt and its protectorate hamlet of Two Oaks are being resettled by inhabitants of Larenyss, as well as Wiernaug intrigued by an existence outside of their traditional forest-bound one. The city is a hub of trade within the Woodmarch, though the abundance of recovered treasure that flows through here inflates prices. Many adventurers and merchants buy new-found magic here and ship or magically transport it to the Hundred Kingdoms or other lands where magic is not so common.

Shalanholt itself is a city of stone, surrounded by a rebuilt wall fifteen feet thick and twenty feet high. Demesne spells protect the city against fire, water, and cold, and most of the city’s buildings needed little more than cleaning before being fit to live in. Newcomers still face some adjustment, particularly to the unusual city guard – a number of animated suits of armor that have patrolled the city nightly for centuries. The nightguard communicate with a minimum of speech and enforce the laws of five centuries ago. Most of these, fortunately, are identical to laws currently in use in Larenyss, though tavern owners have learned to close their doors promptly at midnight, and small-time merchants have learned the nightguard are far faster than authorities elsewhere in removing trade stalls left overnight in a thoughfare. Rumors continue to circulate of a “dayguard” imprisoned somewhere below the city, but years of searching has uncovered no evidence of such.
